wow, fedora installed cleanly, and boots just as cleanly (granted i hit 'c' on the GRUB loader menu and adding 'nousb' to it). i'm not gonna spend too much time on this, for i'm going to be using my work laptop more frequently, after i get it monday, and will be setting up fedora on it.

i never gave an update on this--i got fedora core 1 running on my thinkpad t40 without a hitch.
